The Reality Therapy RT

In Reality Therapy (RT), the therapist helps the client to recognize, understand and change their own behavior based on the fact that the client is in control of their own life. RT is a solution-focused approach in which the client learns to strengthen self-responsible action, to develop successful behavior in order to satisfy their own basic psychological needs.

In RT, social bonds are an essential pillar of well-being. In this context, the client is supported in becoming aware of their own inner desires, adapting their expectations to experience and reality. This direction of therapy provides us with the right tools to better understand our own behavior, make better decisions in the future and regain control over our lives.  

 

Reality Therapy is an evolutionary-systemic approach for people with psychosocial problems and mental illnesses based on the Choice Theory of the US psychiatrist William Glasser (1925 - 2013). Glasser saw diagnoses more as an obstructive personal and social label. In this vein, he also rejected the use of psychotropic drugs.

 

The symptoms we suffer from are seen as an indication that we have not yet managed to live a good quality of life and satisfy our psychological needs. These are: Love and belonging, strength/energy/power, survival, freedom and fun. Psychological complaints are primarily seen as the result of inadequate or absent social relationships.

The therapist's task is to support the client to work on himself, to take responsibility for his own actions and to perceive himself as a being with choices.
